At KC Bison Ranch, we are building a haven for America's national mammal to thrive. Through regenerative agriculture practices and holistic management, we strive to create an amazing habitat for these majestic creatures. The bison is a keystone species—its presence helps maintain the local biodiversity of an ecosystem by influencing the abundance and types of other species. As their migratory patterns carry them across the fields to forage, their hooves aerate the soil, promoting plant growth and dispersing seeds. Their waste enhances plant nutrition by increasing nitrogen in the soil, which facilitates deep-root grass systems that revitalize topsoil and multiply the growth of microorganisms. These conditions promote a strong environment for insects, which attracts more birds and other wildlife. The creation of new life continues each spring as bison calves, known as red dogs for their reddish-orange color, are born.
