KC Bison Ranch – How it all began…
In my 40’s I was hit by some of life’s worst storms. Poor financial decisions, compounded by a divorce created a desert season that continued for over 7 years. As my faith was being tested I learned not to run the other direction, but to embrace these hardships and find joy and contentment in trusting God to help me endure. In 2008 I was blessed with the opportunity to start a new business that became very successful. After 13 years I decided to sell and in the time leading up to the closing, in late 2021, God revealed a new dream to me that started with a pair of boots of all things!
That's right, I bought a pair of Tecovas and was added to their email list, receiving their newsletter: The Outpost. The first article I read was about a guy with no prior experience that moved from Chicago to Montana to start a bison ranch and do field harvesting. This opened my eyes to the world of bison. I’ve always had a desire to own land and have a farm, but I could never get excited about raising most animals. Upon learning about bison, North America’s largest land mammal and America’s national mammal, I became fascinated. I honestly had no idea they were raised on small ranches – especially in the east. They are undoubtedly one of God’s most majestic creations.
So the question I get asked more often than any other is “Why bison?” Reflecting on my past, the answer has become so vividly clear to me. A key characteristic of bison is that they will face storms head on rather than run the other direction making them the perfect symbol of strength, endurance and patience – the same attributes God was equipping me with to finish His work and complete the remainder of this long journey called life. I am still becoming all I should be and as I look at these magnificent beasts I am constantly reminded that I have everything I need when adversity strikes and new troubles come our way.
